Ten months after her last DVDs (the phenomenal pair of Milk-T and Lemon-T), Natsume Rio has finally released some new material in form of another two discs: Freedom and Love Affair. Seems like Rio likes to take really extended vacations between big projects – we should all be so lucky – but it looks like the time has been put to good use: not only is Rio looking better than ever (she's lost a little baby fat around her face and her breasts look gigantic), she's quickly turning into one of the most arresting screen presences working in the idol industry today: the awkwardness which characterized her earlier releases is nowhere to be found, and she effortlessly changes personas – from the cute, somewhat shy school girl to the womanly seductress.
Freedom runs about one hour split between twelve different glamour scenes, plus the opening montage and the credits. The disc skips along at a nice pace, allowing the viewer to take in all the visual splendour Rio offers in each scene, but never getting outstaying its welcome by becoming repetitive. But that being said, there is one thing which is very hard to ignore on all the tracks: Rio's boobs. Now, I don't mean that simply from their obvious size and softness, but the director really likes to shoot close ups of Rio's breasts. Nothing else – just Rio's glorious chest filling the screen. I found this to be both a positive and a negative: if you're obsessed with huge breasts (as I am), this can only be seen as a good thing. But there are lots of idols out there with H-cup+ boobs these days, and what sets Rio apart from the majority is that she is has a great rapport with the camera, and its a shame that we didn't get a little more of Rio's personality. Yes, give us boob-hounds the goods, but let Rio connect with the viewer as well – pulling the camera back a little more to see her cute face wouldn't have hurt.
The opener has Rio channelling Nemoto Harumi, and we find her riding down a dirt road on a bike wearing a very small bikini, her tits jiggling with each bump in the road. Given the circumstances, the crew did the best they could, but they camera work was limited and unimaginative: roughly three quarters of the time the lens was focused on the twins bouncing along – it got a little repetitive, even for a three minute track. Also, for some reason, the video on the track was horrible – there were obvious compression artifacts on many of the shots which marred the scene. Thankfully, the editors seem to have mastered the rest of the disc correctly, as the compression issues are gone on the next track. Rio is taking an outdoor shower wearing some lingerie – a yellow bikini and pantie set with a transparent blue slip. The slip is discarded short after after the scene begins, leaving her in only the wonderfully undersized bra and panties. Nice scene with some great shots of Rio, but nothing you haven't seen before. Next up, Rio is in a field somewhere, wearing bikini bottoms and a very low-cu, tied at the front blue top which produces some incredible under-cleavage. Less than a minute after the beginning of the scene, she undoes the small string and clasps her hands over her boobs. A short while later, the top is completely off, as Rio clutches it to her oversized bosoms. Some truly mind-boggling shots of her chest here make this a boob-lovers dream come true.
Scene four has Rio still outdoors wearing an odd, black dress and high heels. Taking place in some high grass and behind and old building, Rio slinks around, poses on the ground and some wooden stairs. Surprisingly, not much in way of Rio's giant boobs in this one, but the focus is on Rio's well-rounded ass. She hikes up the dress and gives the camera some come-hither looks as it positions itself to give the viewer some nice shots of her behind. Next up, Rio is back inside and bouncing around on a small trampoline wearing some frilly, cream-coloured lingerie. Although a stand-by of top-heavy gravure idols, this wasn't that well executed due to Rio's costume being quite loose, thus losing the visual of seeing her bouncing boobs. Shortly thereafter, she lies down on a nearby couch and poses for the camera. Although you do get some nice shots of her under-cleavage again, the director doesn't give Rio anything to do here, and the camera work is pedestrian. More miss than hit, with this track.
Rio switches to vamp mode in the next part – wearing a very tight fitting bustier, panties, garters and fishnets, its obvious she's out to seduce. She presses her boobs under glass and on various things around the room to produces some unbelievable cleavage, sensuously removes her stockings and teases the viewer. There's a lighting problem at the end of the scene and it runs a little long but overall this is a good, if somewhat cliche track. Rio returns to her roots next and switches into full blown cute mode. Wearing a precariously undersized bikini, Rio kicks around a beach ball in a garden as the off screen staff make life difficult for her. On the plus side... huge bouncing breasts ahoy! A cute little scene which is short enough that it doesn't overstay its welcome. The following track echoes a scene on Lemon-T: starting out standing in a bubble-filled tub, Rio is wearing a bikini with a strapless top. Roughly a minute after the track begins, she turns away from the camera and off comes the top. She plays around in the tub with the bubbles for a while. At one point, the camera man has a mental freeze and but shoots Rio's tits as they float just slightly under the bubbles – no movement whatsoever - just boobs filling the screen. At the end, Rio stands in the tub, her soapy hands attempting to cover her giant breasts while strategically placed bubbles cover her nether regions. Rio has a very cute and sexy way of interacting with the camera here – one of the highlights of the disc.
Another excellent track follows: dressed in a the smallest set of lingerie yet, Rio vamps it up in a small room on a bed. Her top is tiny – it barely covers anything and produces yet more under cleavage. Think Hanai Miri or (more recently) Horii Mizuki. In the latter part of the track, she undoes the clasp and is left holding her now useless bra over her chest. If you've ever wondered exactly how big Rio is, you definitely get a feel here for their size and weight. Great camera work, heart stopping visuals and Rio at her sexiest. The next scene starts off with a water gun fight between Rio and some of the offscreen crew. Fortunately, that doesn't last very long and segues into Rio wearing yet more ill fitting lingerie (slightly larger than the pervious scene, but not by much) and posing against a clear blue sky on what appears to be an old trailer. Nice and light scene, some great shots of Rio, but a little generic. Speaking of generic, the next track has Rio fooling around in a swimming pool with various inflatables. Nothing wrong with this one: Rio's adorable, you get some very nice shots of T and A, but forgettable in the long run.
Have you ever wondered about the true size and shape of Rio's boobs? The final track may be just what you're looking for. She's wearing a... uh... garment which consists of loosely tied together strips of semi-transparent cloth – kind of like a sling bikini. Due to the wonders of double-sided tape, the twins are never fully revealed, but are otherwise unfettered by any real clothing and sway and move in accordance with the laws of gravity and they are a wonder to behold. The scene is quite short, but you get one of the best looks at Rio's incredible body you're ever going to see next to seeing her naked, and, face it, that's not going to happen. There are few other tracks on the disc – typical offering from an Idol-One disc. There's the behind-the-scenes track and some static profile and picture pages.
The bottom line for most Rio fans is that it's been ten months since our goddess has graced the screen with her presence, so whether Freedom was great or god-awful is almost a non-issue. Its fortunate then, that Freedom's positives definitely out-weigh the shortcomings. Although not quite up to level of her releases late last year, fans of Rio-chan and big busted idols in general will find lots to like about this release.
